Umbilical Cord

Umbilical Cord is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells. The source is collected from a newborn’s cord immediately after birth. Hematopoietic stem cells are currently used to treat blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers, and blood disorders. Mesenchymal stem cells have the ability to repair and regenerate several tissues of our body like bones, cartilage, neurons and muscles. There are more than 5000 clinical trials going on to design the potential usage of these special type of cells for treating dreaded disorders like Liver cirrhosis, Spinal, Sports Injuries, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Diabetes, Cardiac ailments, while there are registered FDA approved stem cell products/protocols to treat Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) and Diabetic ulcers. Cord is collected after the delivery of the baby (either normal delivery or by cesarean section). Typically, the entire process takes less than seven minutes. The stem cells harvested from umbilical cord in the lab are younger compared to adult stem cells collected from sources like bone marrow.
